Today's Readings
Reading I
Prv 21:1-6, 10-13
Like a stream is the king’s heart in the hand of the LORD;
wherever it pleases him, he directs it.
All the ways of a man may be right in his own eyes,
but it is the LORD who proves hearts.
To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
Haughty eyes and a proud heart–
the tillage of the wicked is sin.
The plans of the diligent are sure of profit,
but all rash haste leads certainly to poverty.
Whoever makes a fortune by a lying tongue
is chasing a bubble over deadly snares.
The soul of the wicked man desires evil;
his neighbor finds no pity in his eyes.
When the arrogant man is punished, the simple are the wiser;
when the wise man is instructed, he gains knowledge.
The just man appraises the house of the wicked:
there is one who brings down the wicked to ruin.
He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor
will himself also call and not be heard.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 119:1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 44
R. (35) Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
Blessed are they whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the LORD.
R. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
Make me understand the way of your precepts,
and I will meditate on your wondrous deeds.
R. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
The way of truth I have chosen;
I have set your ordinances before me.
R. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
Give me discernment, that I may observe your law
and keep it with all my heart.
R. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
Lead me in the path of your commands,
for in it I delight.
R. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
And I will keep your law continually,
forever and ever.
R. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
Gospel
Lk 8:19-21
The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you.”
He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers
are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” |

Saint Padre Pio
1887 - 1968
September 23

|
Born to a southern Italian farm
family, the son of Grazio, a shepherd. At age 15 he entered the novitiate
of the Capuchin Friars in Morcone, and joined the order at age 19.
Suffered several health problems, and at one point his family thought he
had tuberculosis. Ordained at age 22 on 10 August 1910.
While praying before a cross, he received the stigmata on 20 September
1918, the first priest ever to be so blessed. As word spread, especially
after American soldiers brought home stories of Padre Pio following WWII,
the priest himself became a point of pilgrimage for both the pious and the
curious. He would hear confessions by the hour, reportedly able to read
the consciences of those who held back. Reportedly able to bi-locate,
levitate, and heal by touch. Founded the House for the Relief of Suffering
in 1956, a hospital that serves 60,000 a year. In the 1920's he started a
series of prayer groups that continue today with over 400,000 members
worldwide.
His canonization miracle involved the cure of Matteo Pio Colella, age 7,
the son of a doctor who works in the House for Relief of Suffering, the
hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo founded by Padre Pio. On the night of 20
June 2000, Matteo was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital
with meningitis. By morning doctors had lost hope for him as nine of the
boy's internal organs had ceased to give signs of life. That night, during
a prayer vigil attended by Matteo´s mother and some Capuchin friars of
Padre Pio´s monastery, the child's condition improved suddenly. When he
awoke from the coma, Matteo said that he had seen an elderly man with a
white beard and a long, brown habit, who said to him: "Don't worry, you
will soon be cured." The miracle was approved by the Congregation and Pope
John Paul II on 20 December 2001.
