Common Prayers

Prayer is the path by which we can enter into intimate communion with God our Father, with Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit our soul's most kindly Guest.  By means of prayer we also communicate with Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother as well, and with all the Saints in heaven together with whom we form one single Church, whose Head is Christ.

We have constant need of prayer, therefore, the the same way that we need air to breathe.  Prayer holds the key to our true happiness, our perseverance in faith and grace, our strength to avoid falling into sin, and our willingness to bear the weight of sorrows and trials.  In a word, prayer holds the key to our eternal salvation.

Jesus bade us pray always.  We can put this divine command into action by living constantly in a state of love and adoration toward God, offering Him all our actions and especially our sufferings, seeking to carry out His will by observing the Commandments and the Gospel.

However, we must also dedicate a few moments of the day exclusively to the Lord, when by entering into intimate communion with Him by means of vocal or mental prayer on the things of God (for example, the Eucharist, and the Passion and Death of Christ) we can obtain the strength needed for our Christian life.

The Sign of the Cross

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace!  The Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

Glory Be to the Father

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen.

The Confiteor

I confess to Almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do; and I ask Blessed Mary, Ever Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord Our God.  Amen.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope!  To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in the vale of tears,  Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

V. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer after the Rosary

O God, Whose only-begotten Son, by His Life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech You, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy Mercy. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O My God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because of Your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my God, Who are all-good and deserving of all my love.  I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.  Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

V. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created.

R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.  O God, Who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolations.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Blessing Before Meals

Bless us, O Lord, and these Your gifts, which we are about to receive from Your bounty, through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule and to guide.  Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel Prayer

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in this day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls.  Amen.
