This day - forty days after Christmas - commemorates the Presentation of the Child Jesus to the Temple of Jerusalem, and the ceremony of the Purification prescribed to Jewish women after childbirth. Both events establish Christianity as a religion derived from Judaism.

Candles are blessed today, for the purpose to bring the Light of Christmas, revered and kept in our Churches for 40 days, to individual homes.
