What are the Essential Conditions for First Reception of
the Eucharist?
To
be eligible to begin preparation, the child must be baptized and have at least
one year of formal Catholic instruction prior to the Second Grade. For
those who have arrived here from another Diocese, a letter from their former
Parish must be received verifying their instruction.
An understanding of the Eucharist and a desire to receive Jesus are the basic conditions necessary for the reception of this sacrament.
To be eligible to begin preparation, the child must understand that the Eucharist is a
memorial to the Lord's passion, death and resurrection, and that His sacrifice on the cross and resurrection become present in every celebration
meal at which Christ nourishes us with His word and in His Body and Blood so that we have
a greater love of God and neighbor.

What Practical Way Can Parents Prepare their Child to Receive First Eucharist?
Take your child to Mass on Sundays. Sit where he or she can easily see. Share your experience with each other.
What about Children beyond Second Grade who have not Received
this Sacrament?
Those children who are seven years of age and older and who have not
received any formal Catholic instruction need to be enrolled in the Rite
of Christian Initiation for Children. Please call Charlie Meiser
at 348-9871 for more information.
If your child is baptized and has been receiving formal Catholic
instruction, but for some reason due to a move or transfer, was not able
to receive or prepare for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and
First Communion, he/she can be enrolled in special Sacrament Preparation
Classes.
What is the Parent's Responsibility Concerning Preparation for this Sacrament?
Parents should be involved in the preparation of children for this sacrament.
Since parents are the primary educators of religion to their children, parents are required to attend parent sacramental preparation classes if their child will be celebrating either sacrament of Penance or Eucharist.
These classes are offered for parents in the fall for First Penance and in the spring for First Eucharist in Seton Hall
