Definitions

Ablution*:  Ours is a small clear glass bowl holding water with a gold lid.  It is on a rectangular glass dish.  It is used to cleanse the fingers after distributing Communion.

Purificator (pure-if-i-ka-tor)  A folded piece of rectangular white linen that is used to purify the chalice and paten when Communion is over.  Ours have a small red cross embroidered on them, and the Communion ministers use them to wipe the Communion cup after communicant uses it.

* Item is to be rinsed with a small amount of water (if necessary) which is then consumed as it has bits of the Body and Blood of Our Lord.  Only then should it be washed with soap and water.

Bowl:  (NOT A CIBORIUM)

This bowl is used is washing the priest's hands after he has offered the bread and wine to the Lord and before the consecration of the Mass.  Ours are dull silver color and about 8 inches across with a flat bottom.

Pitcher:  A small container that holds water with which the priest's hands are washed.  Different from flagon.  Ours is a dull silver color.

Towel:  (not a purificator)  A piece of white terry cloth used to try the priest's hands after he has washed them.

Chalice*:  (chal-is)  The large "cup" with which the priest celebrates Mass.  This "cup"  will hold the Sacred Blood of Jesus.

Communion Cups*  Cups that are used to give Communion (the Sacred Blood of Jesus) to the faithful.  Ours are dull silver color, and plainer in design than a chalice.

* Item is to be rinsed with a small amount of water which is then consumed as it has bits of the Body and Blood of Our Lord.  Only then should it be washed with soap and water.

Ciborium* (Sih-bor-ee-um) A large container or bowl that holds the consecrated hosts and is used to distribute Communion.  Ours are gold colored and have lids to protect the hosts when they are carried to the tabernacle.  One is always in the tabernacle and holds the Reserved Sacrament.  (NOTE:  Two ciborium are called ciboria.)

* Item is to be rinsed with a small amount of water which is then consumed as it has bits of the Body and Blood of Our Lord.  Only then should it be washed with soap and water.

Corporal:  A large square piece of linen placed in the center of the altar upon which the Eucharist is consecrated.  It is folded into nine squares.  Everything placed on the corporal on the altar during Mass should be consecrated.  On one side of the altar is another rectangular corporal for the people's Communion cups.

Credence Table:  (Kreed-ence) A table near the altar, which holds the objects necessary for the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Flagon:  (flag-on)  A large "pitcher" like container that holds the wine which will become the Blood of Christ during the Mass.  Different than a regular pitcher that may hold water.  Ours are clear glass.

Paten*: (pat-in)  A plate like, brass colored dish that holds the priest's "host" that will become the Body of Christ.

* Item is to be rinsed with a small amount of water which is then consumed as it has bits of the Body and Blood of Our Lord.  Only then should it be washed with soap and water.

Pyx*:  (piks)  A small container that is used to take Communion to the sick and those confined to their homes.  (Note:  Singular and plural of pyx are pronounced the same.)

Reserved Sacrament:  A number of consecrated hosts, the Body of Christ, placed in a ciborium in the tabernacle.  This is why we genuflect towards the tabernacle when we come into church.

Tabernacle:  (tab-ur-nak-ul)  A large "safe" like container in a church that holds the Reserved Sacrament of the Body of Christ.  The Lord Jesus lives in the tabernacle.  Ours is the large gold container in the Holy Sacrament chapel that can be seen from the church through the round window.

Sacrarium: (suh-crer-ee-um) The "sink" next to the regular sink in the sacristy that allows blessed and sacred items to go into the earth under the church rather than into the  sewer system.

Sanctuary:  (sank-shoe-air-ee) The part of the church, which contains the altar, the presider's chair, the tabernacle, the credence table, etc.  The "holiest" part of the church building.  This area is where the Lord Jesus makes himself present to us.
