St. Ignatius Retreat in Daily Life

St. Ignatius Retreat in Daily Life

The Ignatian Retreat in Daily Life is a prayer journey for those who are seeking a way to grow in prayer and to develop a deeper personal relationship with God.

The Retreat is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola and is a time set apart in the midst of everyday life to help participants discern more clearly God’s movements in their hearts.

In the tradition of Ignatian spirituality, the Retreat focuses on the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus through a prayerful encounter with Scripture. The Ignatian principle of “finding God in all things” lies at the heart of the retreat.

Retreat Format

During the course of 30 weeks—from October through May, participants live their commitment to God, to themselves, and to their fellow participants by following the steps of the Ignatian prayer journey. Each participant commits to these activities:

  • Daily private prayer which includes Scripture, reflection, and journaling.
  • Weekly small group meetings facilitated by a trained Spiritual Director in which participants share their experiences with each other.
  • Twice monthly individual spiritual direction.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

  • Some discipline is required to do your own daily prayer, reading, and meditation. You should expect to devote 30 to 45 minutes each day, but no one is checking or asking you to turn in assignments.
  • Spiritual direction will encourage you but also challenge you.
  • Any group retreat work carries risks and blessings as you get to know other retreatants more personally.
  • You will be expected to hold in confidence whatever people share in your group.
  • You may be moved by the Holy Spirit to “dig deep” as you share your life experiences with others.
  • St. John’s is a large faith community in which some struggle to feel connected to others, but the Spiritual Exercises offer a wonderful opportunity to be involved more intentionally with others as you learn together to pray and to grow spiritually.

Fees for the Retreat

  • The fee for the retreat is $200.00 which takes care of the materials you will be using. It’s important to note that no one is turned away from participating in the retreat for lack of funds.
  • There is also a small fee for twice monthly spiritual direction.

Hear from those who have made their retreat:

"I signed up for the Spiritual Exercises 6 years ago after our family suffered a tragic loss. During these months, He held me in my grief, spoke to my confused heart and taught me life saving lessons. So when I signed up again this year, I expected a similar experience, but God always does more than I could ever imagine. I came again because He had more for me to learn and I did."

"The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius changed my life. Through prayer and meditation, I have learned how to see God in all my experiences. My friendship with Jesus is deepened and He has shown me how to use my gifts to serve him more."

"I did not realize how thirsty my spirit was for this deeper way of prayer and faith community. The RIDL uses a 3-way approach of spiritual direction, weekly group time and spiritual exercises inspired by St. Ignatius. I have become more attuned to the beautiful work of God in the world."

"I never thought about using my imagination in prayer, but when I did, scripture came alive in a very personal and moving way. I followed along with Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem; I was the woman at the well and one of the women at the foot of the cross. I would never have thought to pray like this before going to the Retreat in Daily Life."

"For years I put off participating in the RIDL. Thanks’ to a friend’s encouragement I knew now was the time and it has changed my life. I always thought my Catholic faith was strong, but I was amazed at how much more I was capable of. It has deepened my relationship with the Trinity and the Blessed Virgin and given me new insight and depth to my prayer life and my relationships."
